Emotional & Spiritual Care for Tornado Survivors 💙
Over the years, Hope Force has responded to many communities after tornadoes. Our teams move quickly to help families secure their homes and prevent further damage. But just as important as the physical work is something less visible: offering a listening ear to those who have experienced trauma.
One story always comes to mind...
Several years ago, tornadoes swept through parts of Arkansas. Our team was helping an elderly couple whose home was damaged. They told us how they watched the tornado come across the field behind their house and quickly moved to their safe spot.
What happened next stayed with them. As the tornado passed over, it lifted them slightly off the ground inside their safe place and gently set them back down. Miraculously, their home remained structurally sound, with only shingles torn from the roof.
But their relief was mixed with grief. Just a few houses down, a dear friend had lost their life in the same storm.
While it was important to tarp their roof quickly, we realized something even more important—we needed to slow down and be present.
The husband processed by telling the story again and again. Each time, we listened and encouraged him.
His wife was still in shock, struggling to process both the storm and the loss. Our chaplains gathered around her, not to fix anything, but to simply listen.
Sometimes the most important work we do isn’t climbing on a roof. It’s standing with someone in their pain and reminding them they are not alone.
In the middle of tornado season, that presence can mean just as much as any tarp we place on a roof. ❤️
This is why we emphasize Emotional & Spiritual Care in Hope Force Reservist training—because survivors need both practical help and compassionate care to find real hope.
We are always building our Reservist team and would love for you to join us! Here are the Hope Force training opportunities coming up:
